You Never Forget Your First

For me, it all started with Superman.

Back in 1974, Kellogs ran a promotion, offering a collection of original Superman radio broadcast for boxtops (and a small cheque, of course). My grandmother surprised me with the stack of albums, and I commandeered the hi-fi for weeks. I listened to Superman every chance I got, starting with the very first episode, where a tiny infant escaped a dying planet to become the Man of Steel.  Kellogg's made sure to include plenty of classic ads for Rice Crispies and Pep (whatever that was), a nostalgic touch which added to the experience.

In an age before video games and children's cable networks, those records got a lot of attention.  I played the same stories over and over on a battered portable record player until I knew the lines by heart.

Vinyl being vinyl and children being children, those records didn't survive.  Don't get me wrong.  Grandma got her money's worth, but after a few years of solid play, they were more scratch than story.  Eventually, I gave in, and conceded to the fact that I wouldn't hear my records again.

Over time, other stories started to creep in, other heroes.  I discovered the Green Hornet and the Lone Ranger.  Granddad introduced me to Lamont Cranston's alter ego, the Shadow.  Later, I'd find Star Wars and Hitchhiker's Guide on modern radio.

But Superman was always something special for me.

Skip ahead a few decades.  Podcasting gave me back my records, and a thousand more besides.  Where I once had 5 LPs, I now have the entire run of the radio show.

But that's my story.  How about you?
Have you got any radio memories?  What hooked you when you were a kid?

I'd love to hear about it in the comments.
